How much does all this cost?

I usually charge by the project, based on an estimation of the time required, value and scope of the work. As a rough guide, my day rate is currently £240 and my hourly rate is £30. You can see examples of what I would charge for different projects on my price list page

I am totally happy to write 100% human, AI-free content. If you wanted AI-written content, I’m sure you wouldn’t be here. But what about AI-assisted content?

I’ve experimented with the ChatGPT LLM, always transparently. Here are my conclusions so far:

  • Using AI to write a first draft. Not a fan. Fastest route to limp, generic content.
  • Using AI to redraft. Better, but there is such a thing as too polished. I prefer to redraft myself after feedback.
  • Using AI to give feedback with specific instructions not to edit anything. Best option so far. But I would prefer feedback from an actual human, such as a client (yes, that’s you) or, in my dream world, a professional editor. That’s why I will always include revisions in any project estimate.

Conclusion: When ChatGPT gives feedback, it is generally useful. When humans give feedback, it is also useful. I am open to receiving feedback from both robots and humans!

Food for thought: Ahrefs (a major player in the world of Search Engine Optimisation) found that 74.2% of new websites included AI content. However, only 2.5% of pages were “pure AI”. The overwhelming majority of AI content was either prompted, edited or drafted by a human writer. I wonder, will the 25% of content that is purely human now stand out more?

To gain a deeper understanding of how I feel about AI, peruse my blog. Or (even better) anything by Yuval Noah Harari.

Certainly! (This outline is assuming you reach out to me, rather than the other way round.)

Step 1: You like what you see so far and contact me.

Step 2: We have a discussion about what your project involves, the work required and what I can bring to the project. There is no charge for this stage as you may decide my services are not for you, and that’s ok.

Step 3: If we both agree that the project is a good match for my skills, we will complete a brief outlining your requirements. I will use this to estimate the number of hours required and draft a proposal that includes fees and deadlines, etc.

Step 4: If you are happy with the proposal, I will require a 50% down payment before starting work on the first draft.

Step 5: On receiving the down payment, I create the first draft.

Step 6: You receive the first draft to review. At this stage, I will invoice you for 25% of the total payment.

Step 7: I will revise the work based on your comments. Up to three rounds of revisions after the first draft are included in the price.

Step 8: The project is signed off and the remaining 25% is paid.

I know how to use Canva and I built this website, so I do have some digital skills. However, I am not a professional designer, videographer or web developer. I charge by the project or by the hour, so I am happy to use Canva or similar for small business projects, such as leaflets.
